A new year always excites me. Life kind of sparkles for a while as people settle into, well, the newness of a change in pace and years. January brings with her a challenge. ”Do your best with me”, she seems to say as we go bustling about in the cold. The beginning of things again and yet a closure of sorts, January is a transitory month – an easing out of what was and a head first dive into the cold, uncharted waters of what will be.
I have a practice that I do about two to four weeks before the new year. I try to begin beginning again. Ha! That is not a typing error. I meant to say it that way. The way I figure it, if I begin to begin before the beginning, then I’m ready come January 1. Sometimes. If I get a rough start, I still have a few weeks/days to try once more. If I get off to a pretty decent start, well, I just keep going.
Since I’ve been doing this, January doesn’t seem so ominous. She seems more of a friend in the distance encouraging me to start fresh and new, but to continue the healthy (not just for my body, but for my soul) habits that I have maintained throughout the past year. Once I complete the journey of meeting her, we greet each other comfortingly.
My new year motto for years now has been “Start as you mean to go on, Malinda”. I would encourage you to find for yourself a new year motto this January. It’s not too late. She’s pretty forgiving.
Much love to you all,
Daughter #2
