I’m thinking about Pentecost and what that meant / still means to the followers of Jesus…here are just a few thoughts in preparation for Sunday…
The day of Pentecost (we celebrate this year on May 19th) is the day that the followers of Jesus received what enabled them to stand up without controlling fear and become a force to be reckoned with. It was the day that God’s Spirit witnessed with the believers spirit that they were children of God (Romans 8:16). That recognized, Peter and the others allowed the outpouring of God’s Spirit access to their hearts and minds and they began to fearlessly proclaim the Good News of the Gospel of and about Jesus to everyone around.
The coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter two is marked by fire and speaking in other languages, it is marked with the boldness of Jesus’ followers to stand up against the forces of evil and proclaim the mind of God as expressed through Jesus the Christ.
Too often, I think, we stress so much the importance of the tongues of fire and the speaking in other languages and don’t spend enough time looking at the standing up in the face of adversity.
On Pentecost Jesus gave the ability to stand out, to proclaim, to have a boldness about our faith so that we might live Life, as the Apostle Paul said, being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we cannot see. Pentecost fulfilled the promise of Jesus to be with us always…
