Patriotism and Discipleship is very similar.

Just as Patriotism calls people to an allegiance to their country, Discipleship calls people to an allegiance to God through Jesus Christ.  True Discipleship carries the same commitment and the same call to arms as Patriotism.  Dietrich Bonhoeffer said it best when he said:

“When Christ calls a person, he bids them to come and die.”

The difference between Patriotism and Discipleship though is that one can be a Patriot, maintain their right to themselves and live. But Discipleship only begins at the death of self when self will is given to God.  A Patriot must be prepared to die, but they are not necessarily prepared to live after that.  Discipleship is governed by a life that is not only prepared to die but a life that is prepared to Live.

Discipleship is a call to come and die, but that call is in reality a call to come and Live.

Peace

Jim
