I read something the other day that confirmed in my mind that there are others who think as I do concerning mission. We often think of mission as going off to the Congo and eating bugs and lizards helping native tribes have better lives…and that is a good thing to do.
But Christian community often presents itself in more subtle ways – the ordinary of the everyday. And if most people are like me we hurry through our day missing the lion’s share of the opportunities to be Christ in our world.
Jesus said in Matthew 18:20 that where two or three were gathered in his name that he would be among us…even two or three…
So it seems that our everyday offers ample opportunity to experience Jesus and to help others experience him as well. As the author I was reading put it:
“Look (for community) not just to the massive throng or the dramatic moment. We should look as well to the simplest instance of one life brushing up against another.”
That paints a beautiful picture to me, one life brushing up against another. I think of all the people we stand in line with at the grocery store, the students we rub shoulders with at school, the people we work with to the people we sit beside in the church pew…and as the author said,
“If love flows among us, even briefly, God is there…If we find ourselves bound together even momentarily, God is present.”
So if we think about it, we become channels of God’s peace as we go through each day…as long as we take the time to think about it…
