I read this today;
“The real spiritual life must be horizontal as well as vertical; spread more and more as well as aspire more and more…it must invade and transform all homely activities and practical things.”
People often equate the spiritual life as a life sitting off in a corner somewhere with hands folded in solemn prayer. And while the spiritual does include going inside the prayer closet and spending time alone with Jesus, the alone time – the vertical time – is preparation for the horizontal time of reaching out to people and situations around us. It seems that real spiritual understanding requires vertical and horizontal witness.
Just some thoughts…
