Early in the Gospels – Matthew 5 – Jesus began his backward  and upside down teaching.  As if the Beatitudes were not shocking enough he  prefaced his teaching by saying:

“You have heard it said – various common thought of the day – but I say to you.”

Knowing what we know of Jesus, if he were to walk among our towns today and say, “You have heard it said…” and then went on to cite some of our modern day issues, what might the, “But I say to you…” statement be?

If we really put some time into thinking about that, those thoughts will send us back a few verses where Jesus said:

“Blessed are you when you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”  (Matthew 5: 11, 21 NIV)

Keep in mind that Jesus was killed because of the depth of his love.  Be compassionate in our thoughts today and see how that affects our thinking.

Just some food for thought…
