The sermon on the mount in Matthew five, six, and seven is the foundational teaching that colored Jesus’ life and example.  We need those foundational truths to make it from beginning to end.

Since most of our life is lived trying to figure out the middle, we need the foundation so that when the middle gets stormy the Holy Spirit can remind us of what Jesus taught (John 14:26).  What Jesus taught was what our frame of mind should be – a humble and gentle spirit – what our attitude should be – love, peace, forgiveness, and humility – what our life is to represent – “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you” (Matthew 7:12).

Live those things and we have the basics of a life following Jesus…from there figuring out the middle becomes much less troubling…
