“If you abide in me, and my words abide in you…”
Jesus gives us some promises after that, but the promises hinge on our abiding in him, and in reality part of our problem sometimes…is that we so often want to focus on the promise:
“…ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
We just seem to like the “ask for whatever you wish” part, often at the expense of not getting the abiding part down well.
But the real test is not on Jesus’ part of giving us what we ask, the real test is whether or not we’re abiding in Jesus, and if his words are abiding in us. Abiding in Jesus is the major theme of these verses…not whether or not we get everything we ask, because according to Jesus, even what we ask is dependent on our abiding in him and his words in us.
“Abide in me…then…ask for whatever you wish.”
Just some thoughts…
